Incident report · Chapter 404

Speculation

Voyage day 11–12

Kurapika audits Zhang Lei's coins — a cumulative mint compounding toward 10^64, a king's tool for mass-producing Nen users — while keeping the loyalty-manipulation reading and Coventoba's theft to himself. Halkenburg-in-Balsamilco narrates the mind swap's proven rules and his plan: kill his own body, ride Balsamilco ten hours, win as a dead man. As day twelve begins, Halkenburg's poisoned body dies; Benjamin, believing his order fulfilled, choreographs a stately funeral.

Event sequence
  1. InvestigationDay 11Canonical
    Kurapika prices the coins

Invited to Room 1003, Kurapika reads Zhang Lei's beast as a cumulative Conjurer: coins stored long enough compound toward 10^64, at which point holders' nodes open unaided — a king's mint for mass-producing Nen users after coronation. He keeps the pseudo-coercive loyalty implication, and Coventoba's theft, to himself.

  2. Nen revealDay 11Canonical
The full mechanics of the mind swap

Halkenburg-in-Balsamilco narrates his ability's rules, proven on Shikaku, Sumidori, and Vict: one mind awake at a time, his side holding priority; when the possessed side's original body dies, the victim's mind returns home and the intruder sleeps. His plan: kill his own body, ride Balsamilco for roughly ten hours, and win the contest as a dead man.

  3. DeathDay 12 · early hoursCanonical
    Halkenburg's body dies

Poisoned with TSK-17 by his own possessed hand, Halkenburg's body fails despite resuscitation as day twelve begins. Benjamin dictates a stately funeral — procession, send-off, guards as pallbearers — believing his order to Balsamilco was simply carried out. 'Balsamilco' thanks his brother, privately.

    Consequences (2)
    • Officially the fourth royal death of the voyage — but the soul persists in Balsamilco
    • Charges against Halkenburg's guards are dropped so they can carry his casket
  4. DecisionDay 11Canonical
A second round of classes — with Camilla's guard

Kurapika sets round two for 9 a.m. Thursday and notes the anomaly: Camilla, who ignored round one, is sending exactly one guard. He orders Bill and Shimano to keep that student as far from Woble as shifts allow.
