Kacho & Fugetsu — The Escape

Kacho resolves to 'work with' Fugetsu to kill the other princes — and, if the two of them are last, to beg their father to spare Fugetsu. The ruthless framing is itself a mask over the real plan taking shape between the sisters.

A door appears before the Eleventh Prince, opening onto a tunnel that ends at her twin's bed. The beast that will define the twins' escape — and their tragedy — introduces itself as a childhood game made real.

Fugetsu's door reappears on the fourth day, and she theorizes it can manifest once per day. The twins now have an escape mechanism with a timetable.

Kacho will escape with Fugetsu during the next Sunday banquet's music show — performers staged in the passageway, the acts piped through every Tier 1 speaker. Melody coordinates through Mosquitone Morse code; nobody in either camp knows what Kacho's own beast is.

A person with no ID turns up on Tier 3: the Eleventh Prince, off the royal deck through no corridor any camera saw. Mizaistom imposes a gag order and takes her into protective interrogation himself.

Mizaistom escorts Fugetsu back to Tier 1 under 72-hour monitoring, to be lifted before Sunday's banquet. Her teleportation is now known to the Hunters — and, through Yushohi's report, to Benjamin's camp.

Mizaistom's phoned instructions to Melody carry a hidden Hunter-code message ordering the opposite of their surface meaning: help the twins escape. The Zodiac quietly chooses the princes over the mission's neutrality.

At the banquet concert — Salé-salé's absence excused as illness — Melody plays with full sincerity, projecting a vista of mountains and butterflies to everyone in earshot, princes in their quarters included, over the Tier 1 loudspeakers. Three minutes of ship-wide trance.

Under cover of the trance, the pianist Keeney leads the twins past unconscious soldiers to a lifeboat, then shoots himself so no accomplice can implicate the Association. A widower looking for a place to die, he chose saving the twins as his.

As the lifeboat nears open water a horde of hands closes in — leaving the ship means death for a contest participant. Kacho pushes her sister through a door back aboard; a 'Kacho' follows moments later, and the real one drifts out to sea, dead in the boat. Her formless beast, Without You, now wears her shape to protect the living twin.

Keeney's suicide note claims he acted alone, but several princes, understanding now what her flute can do, 'invite' Melody to their suites with pardons as leverage. The Bureau keeps her long precisely to keep her out of their hands.

At the Justice Bureau, the 'Kacho' who came back declares herself likely a guardian spirit resurrected to protect Fugetsu — and out of the contest either way. She orders the grieving Melody to stand up: they will make Fugetsu king, and Fugetsu must not learn the truth.

The Bureau investigator handling Melody — heartbeat 'precise as an atomic clock' — proposes wiping out the higher-ranked princes with slow poison during her performances, and confesses he loves her. Melody agrees while privately assuming he is manipulated or a mastermind's tool.

Fugetsu reports a 'breakthrough': her once-a-day ability now works repeatedly, and she is euphoric, exhausted, and gray. Melody hears evil spirits gathering around a heartbeat as weak as Zetsu. Something has marked the Eleventh Prince and is feeding on her use of her own power.

Kaiser escorts Fugetsu to hand-deliver 'Kacho's final letters' to each prince — cover for marking rooms Fugetsu's door can later reach, and for watching each prince react to Bureau-leaked secrets. Benjamin's beast incidentally screeches Fugetsu's evil spirits away; Basho slips her a protective haiku charm.

On Tier 2, Kaiser hosts the Fugetsu protection cell: the sleeping prince, Melody, and the beast-Kacho who frets that her own upkeep drains her sister. Kaiser's read on the funeral: grand, solemn, and to be survived before whatever comes next.
